Released on the day before what would have been his 75th birthday, just three days before the sixth anniversary of his death, Toy (Toy Box) comprises 2000 re-recordings of material David Bowie first recorded between 1964 and 1971. The 12 tracks that were to be released as Toy in 2001 (which were included in the box set Brilliant Adventure, which was released last month, reaching No.24) are accompanied in Toy (Toy Box) by a further 26 recordings including alternate mixes, demos and b-sides, of which 20 have not been previously released. Issued as a triple CD and on a six disc 10-inch vinyl box which retails for nearly £100, Toy (Toy Box) debuts at No.5 (*,384 sales).
Bowie’s 71st Top 75 album and 34th Top 10 album (73rd and 35th including Tin Machine releases), its sales are mostly physical, with CDs contributing 5,851, and vinyl 989 to its overall consumption. While it has grossed more money than any other vinyl album in the week, it is not the biggest seller in the format – that honour goes to another Bowie album, the resurgent Hunky Dory. A re-entry at No.31 on the main chart – its highest position since 2017 - 2,081 of its 2,550 sales in the week are from vinyl, the bulk of which (93.04%) are for the slightly belated and newly released 50th anniversary picture disc version.
Meanwhile, 2016 Bowie compilation Legacy rallies 38-19 (3,231 sales), reaching its highest chart position for exactly a year.
Sales of Bowie vinyl in the week cement his position atop the decade and century to-date vinyl sales chart. Prior to the current frame, Bowie’s vinyl sales for the 2000s of 582,704 placed him ahead of the only other act to top half a million units – The Beatles (535,596 sales).
In the 2020s, the same two acts lead the way with Bowie on 134,237 sales and The Beatles on 113,613.
Anmerkung: Die Zahl vor dem Komma ist bis dato nicht überliefert. Der Viertplatzierte Gunna (DS4EVER) hat insgesamt 10,622 verkaufte Einheiten, so dass eben jener Wert für Bowies TOY (TOY BOX) bei 7,384 bis hin zu 10,384 liegen kann.
