Sorry für meine Naivität, aber ich dachte immer Brian Wilson singt bei seinen Auftritten selber. Es sieht aber so aus als würde er nur Piano spielen und etwas Backgroundgesang beisteuern?

Tut er auch. Über die Jahre hinweg hat er aber ein paar Leadvocals abgegeben, weil er die einfach nicht mehr schafft, er hat ja auch so seine Gebrechen und ist nicht bei bester Stimme - vor ein paar Jahren sah das noch anders aus. Bei "Darlin'" und "Don't worry baby" werden zum Beispiel die jeweiligen Leads von Bandmitgliedern gesungen. Außerdem tourt er ja auch nicht mehr alleine, sondern mit Al Jardine und Blondie Chaplin. Al bekommt da auch seine Leads ab und Blondie singt meistens drei Lieder (im Moment "Sail on sailor", "Feel flows" und den größen Teil von "Long promised road").
Bei Beach Boys Stücken können die Grenzen zwischen Background und Lead aber auch sehr verschwimmen; sie waren ja eine Gesangsgruppe. Klavier spielt er nicht so viel. Die "In my room" Darbietung von oben ist eine Art neues Arrangement, da man sonst das Original als Vorlage nahm. Weshalb man jetzt auf Brian am Klavier und den Rest der Gruppe ohne Instrumente genommen hat, weiß ich nicht. Aber es gab neulich ein Background-Video von der Truppe, wie sie das Lied singen, nur von Gitarre begleitet. Möglicherweise kam dabei die Idee. Es könnte sich auch um ein Tribut an Nicky Wonder, Leadgitarrist und Backgroundsänger, handeln, der während der momentanen Tournee unerwartet im Schlaf gestorben ist.

As the concert industry surreally moves online in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, Rolling Stone is the latest to launch a series of live-from-home online music series with “In My Room” — and fittingly, the series will launch today at 3 p.m. ET/ 12 p.m. PT with the author of that ode to solitude, Beach Boys cofounder and main songwriter Brian Wilson.

Thanks for the heads-up. His twitter blurb links to his Apple Music radio show (episode #238) where he briefly discusses the documentary... at around 25:00 in, he says:
He saw the film a couple nights ago.
It shows above all else what a musical genius BW is.
BW is very honest in the film. Elton has never seen BW open up like this.
