“Elvis: Before He Was King” offers a firsthand account of the life of a young Elvis Presley. The book begins in 1949 when the Presley family moved into the Lauderdale Courts, a Memphis Housing Authority complex in Memphis, Tennessee. Elvis was fourteen years old at the time. On his second day in the Courts, Elvis met Paul Dougher who lived in the same building. Paul and Elvis formed an immediate friendship that lasted until Elvis’ death.

In the book, Paul shares stories that reveal a unique portrait of Elvis during his teenage years. He includes details of many boyhood experiences that formed the basis of their lifelong friendship.

The book also touches on the isolation Elvis felt once he reached a level of success that would be unmatched by any other entertainer. It offers insight into the despair and loneliness surrounding Elvis toward the end of his life.

In the final few chapters, Paul offers his personal thoughts on the events and actions that contributed to the untimely death of his friend--a man with one of the greatest voices the world has ever heard.
