Raised On Rock

Sandi Pichon is working on a book titled "Raised On Rock". She is a fan who met Elvis lots of times and the book details the parallels of her life with Elvis' life, the concerts and Vegas shows she attended, becoming friends with the Memphis Mafia, and how Elvis changed as he became ill. The songs he sang, the clothes he wore, his hysterical sense of humor and the heartbreak of his death. The book will contain 40 pages of unpublished photo's, both concerts and candids, from Sandi, Dorothy Campbell, Keith Alverson, George Hill and Joyce Biddie Hulsey. A few photos have been published on websites.

The foreword was written by Kathy Westmoreland. She is currently looking for a publisher through her agent, so there is no publicationdate yet.

When did you first meet Elvis ?

In 1956 when I lived in Memphis. I was 12 and he was 21. He was 9 years and 3 months older.

I am so exited about your upcoming book, how many vegas shows did you see ?

I don't really have a count - I have to admit I'm not a trivia nut so numbers don't really mean that much to me. But I went twice a year when he was in Vegas, from 1973 until 1975 usually staying 3 or 4 days and saw both shows every night.

Do you know how many pictures you took during these shows ?

<span style='color:red'>Sandi :</span>
Here again I'm not sure about numbers, but I always bought the 36 exposure rolls of film and I would shoot until I ran out of film. Not all pictures would be good; some would be blurry or the lighting was bad or the angle. And I wasn't an expert photographer; just a lucky one with a good camera! I do admit I have quite a collection.

Was it hard to take the pictures in vegas ?

<span style='color:red'>Sandi :</span>
It was extremely tricky. Cameras were not allowed so you had to use high speed film and available light. Judy Palmer of Seattle gave me the tips on how to shoot using available light. One night my friend Phyllis Tate, who was seated right next to me and we were right on the stage, had her camera taken away. They removed the film but gave her camera back to her after the show. I was fortunate that never happened to me.

I know Parker was keeping an eyes on people that took pictures of his boy, Shaver was having big trouble taking pictures, did you have the same trouble ?

I tried to keep a low profile; I wasn't as obvious, or as good, as Sean and only had the one camera, so I didn't really have a problem.

Did you meet Elvis back stage in vegas or on tour in the 70`s ?

<span style='color:red'>Sandi :</span>
Yes, both. Well actually it wasn't backstage in Vegas but up in the suite.

What is your best memory of him ?

<span style='color:red'>Sandi :</span>
There are more than one and oddly enough, my favorite memories where at the concerts rather than before or after. When he would point to me in the audience and say "Come here baby" and I would be the only one approaching the stage - believe me it was a rush to hear thousands of fans screaming and knowing how special and lucky I was. My favorite "candid " moment was in Dec 1973 when my friend Joyce Biddie Hulsey and I were invited into Stax recording studio where he was recording. We saw him later at 3 am and he looked fantastic. He had on a maroon colored corduroy shirt with a short cape attached, black pants and black boots. He took one look at us and said "Don't you girls ever sleep?" Another favorite time was March 74 in Memphis when Joyce and I were in the room next to him at the Howard Johnson's. Everyone thought he was at Graceland but he wasn't. We were included in the police escort to the coliseum and what a hoot that was driving through Memphis right behind Elvis' limo with a police escort and Elvis turning around and laughing and laughing.
