Caught In The Act & Something Old, Something New wurde erstellt von Joe Spencer

cd "Something Old, Something New" 26.01.74. OS

2001 Theme; C, C Rider; I Got A Woman/Amen; Love Me; Let Me Be There; You've Lost That Loving Feeling; Sweet Caroline; Love Me Tender; Long Tall Sally/Whole Lotta Shakin'/Mama Don't Dance/Flip Flop And Fly/Jailhouse Rock/Hound Dog; Fever; Polk Salad Annie; Spanish Eyes; Suspicious Minds; Introductions; I Can't Stop Loving You; Help Me; American Trilogy; Can't Help Falling In Love

Memory Records strikes again with two great new CD's containing unreleased Elvis concert recordings. CAUGHT IN THE ACT (MR 2027-2) contains the spectacular August 26th, 1973 Las Vegas Midnight Show. Elvis is in exceptional form during this concert, and delights the audience with an excellent mix of rock 'n' roll ('Johnny B.Goode'), gospel ('How Great Thou Art'), blues ('Steamroller Blues'), greatest hits ('Suspicious Minds', country ('Release Me') and ballads ('The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face'). In the case of 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face', he even includes the verse that was omitted from the studio. A very touching moment is when Elvis introduces his six-year old daughter Lisa Marie to the audience, and dedicates 'Teddy Bear' to her. Sleevenotes for this release were written by Elvis expert Arjan Deelen, author of the excellent CAUGHT IN A TRAP book.

The second releaseis SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW (MR 2028-2) and it contains the January 26th, 1974 Opening Show. This release and the first one complement eachother very well; five months after the turbulent August / September 1973 engagement a more subdued Elvis returns to Vegas, and surprises the audiences with new songs from the recent Stax sessions ('Spanish Eyes', 'Help Me'), as well as the completely new 'Let Me Be There'. This concert also marks the debut of bass player Duke Bardwell, who performed with Elvis from January 1974 to April 1975.

Both CD's contain top-notch audience recordings, copied from the original tapes, and digitally improved using the latest technology. As you've come to expect from our label, both are also excellently packaged with sleevenotes, rare photos and all the necessary info. They are pressed in a limited quantity.

Something Old, Something New

This CD from the “ Memory label “ was released before Christmas along with “ Caught In The Act “. This CD also recorded from the audience contains the “ opening show “ of January 26th, 1974 in Las Vegas.

Before going further I’d like to specify one thing. This CD contains indeed the very first show of that Vegas season but it’s also the January 26th, 1974 dinner show. The official “opening show “ in January was on the 27th. Originally the opening night was scheduled for Friday January 25th , but it was set back a day for not conflicting with Frank Sinatra’s opening at Ceasar’s Palace. Elvis’ “ by invitation only “ show for the press and invited guests was also moved to Sunday evening. However since Saturday was the busiest night in Vegas then there were two shows that night. It also explains why there were a lot of celebrities introduced on the 27th when compared to the few introduced on this CD. The following celebrities introduced on the opening night (27th) were : Lorne Green, James Brolin, George Burns, Danny Thomas, Mike Connors (Mannix), Jack Lord and after “ Help Me “ Marty Passeta was introduced. On the show reviewed here Elvis introduces Dyann Cannon, Sammy Shore, Jack Lord and a bit later in the show Colonel Parker.

Given the above Elvis performed two shows on the January 26th ( dinner & midnight ) and only one show on the 27th, and beginning Monday, January 28th there were two shows each night. Obviously this is a technicality but officially the opening show was on January 27th. ( There are some tapes circulating from this season that are wrongly dated, and the most common one is a tape labelled as “ January 26, 1974 opening show “ while in fact it’s the “ January 27, 1974 opening show (by invitation only) “.)

Photographs from the January / February ’74 are quite rare so it’s not a big surprise to find a picture of the March 10th, 1974 Roanoke,VA. concert on the front cover. The back cover is a backstage shot taken in January 1974. Inside there are different shots taken backstage, most of them being from February ‘74.The liner notes are brief but relevant to the content, however there’s a slight error in the text while mentioning Elvis performed “ A Big Hunk O’ Love “ for the very last time on the 21st, it can’t be since the season started five days later.

For my personal taste I do prefer this CD over “ Caught In The Act “ and for many reasons. Elvis was happier by the end of 1973 and his recordings at Stax in December seemed to demonstrate that fact. He also knew that he was returning in Las Vegas but only for 14 days when compared to his earlier 4-week appearances, no doubts this new contract was pleasing him.

I find his first show of the season very good with Elvis focusing on the performance more than having fun. He brought back “ You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling “ in the show but dropped it from his set list after the January 30th M/S ( not performed since 1972 ), “ Sweet Caroline “ (Sung on a few occasions at the January / February 1973 Season). He also included brand new songs he just recorded at Stax in December like “ Spanish Eyes “ and “ Help Me “, and added “ Let Me Be There “ ( a hit by Olivia Newton-John ). The backbone of his show still contained songs like ; Suspicious Minds, American Trilogy, I Got A Woman / Amen, Polk Salad Annie and several others. From beginning to end you have the feeling that Elvis was happy to be back on stage.

The sound quality is rather good for an audience recording. I find this one more enjoyable than “ Caught In The Act “ on this aspect and it’s playing at the right speed. The sound and performance are also more dynamic. Of all the live shows released by “ Memory Records “ this is my favourite so far. There are indeed something old, something new and definitely something for everybody on this CD.

I’d like to add a few comments here. BMG/FTD have in their vaults several soundboards from this Las Vegas season, in fact they have almost them all according to the listing in “ Sessions II “ book from J.A.T. Publishing. I think most of these shows were pretty good and the January 27th, 1974 show would be a GREAT start from the FTD label.

Caught In The Act

This CD from the “ Memory label “ was released before Christmas and contain the August 26th, 1973 midnight show recorded from the audience. The pictures on front and back cover are from the March 1974 tour ( Hampton Rds, VA. ), same for the CD itself and for all the other shots with the “ Blue Flower “ jumpsuit. They were most certainly used because it was indeed a suit worn by Elvis in August 1973 on a regular basis.

There are extra photographs inside : one on stage shot from August 1973 ( Blue target suit ), three taken backstage in August 1973 ( Memphis suit & Blue target ), one from February 5th 1973 in Vegas with Virginia Coons and another backstage shot from August 1972. The liner notes written by Arjan Deelen gives a pretty good overview of the August / September 1973 Las Vegas Season. I do agree with him on the fact that Elvis was enjoying himself more than the two or three previous engagements, and having a great time with the audience. However I think Elvis was focusing more on his singing ability in both 1972 engagements which lead to great versions of “ My Way “, “ What Now My Love “, “ I’ll Remember You “, “ American Trilogy “ and several others.

This August 26th, 1973 M/S show is definitely typical of the second half of the season, yet I think the first two weeks were a bit better. This concert is excellent overall and enjoyable from beginning to end. There was certainly something for everyone that night with some oldies ( Love Me, Blue Suede Shoes and Johnny B. Goode ), great ballads ( What Now My Love ?, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, You Gave Me A Mountain ), and a great version of “ How Great Thou Art “ with reprise.

The sound quality is above average for this type of recordings although I find the sound a bit flat. It’s certainly better in terms of sound quality that “ Have Some Fun Tonight “ and “ The Man In White vol.3 “ by example. Several shows circulating from this season are running a bit too fast and this one is no exception. In reducing the pitch on my CD player of about 2% Elvis’ vocal was improved and made the whole experience more enjoyable.
