Elvis Presley's Memphis Closes 9/16/2003
As of Tuesday, September 16th, Elvis Presley's Memphis restaurant on Beale Street will be closed.

We are proud of the excellence of the facility, the quality of the operation and the dedication of our employees there.

Elvis Presley Enterprises has made a substantial investment in the historic Lansky Building at 206 Beale St. and will continue to lease and control the property. Because of the continued growth of the downtown market, we consider this building and location to be extremely valuable.

EPE has other plans for the building and will continue to investigate other opportunities in order to maximize the benefits of this superb location.

...selber schuld EPE...mir hat das Ambiente, das Essen, die Bedienung und das Programm darin gar nicht gefallen....oder war es das was sich Fans von einem Elvis-Restaurant vorgestellt haben ????

mir hat es dort sehr gut gefallen und auch das personal war (trotz megastress, weil elvis week) sehr nett (der barkeeper kannte sogar 2 tage später unsere namen noch, was bei den menschenmassen damals erstaunlich ist).

Wie ist es denn da so drin..erzählt doch mal bitte!

das konzept dieses restaurants fand ich genial: in der mitte eine bühne, auf der es täglich live musik gab, regelmäßig auch von bekannten leuten wie tcb band, jordanaires, ed enoch, imperials usw. alles in sehr ansprechender und "gediegenen" atmosphäre mit vielen orignialstücken aus graceland.

ich war sehr gerne dort. bin traurig dass es das EPM nicht mehr gibt.

Ja ich habe mich mega-super damals gefreut dass solch ein Lokal eröffnet wurde....aber das Musik-Programm ist nur in der Elvis-Week interessant gewesen. Ich hasste z.B. diese extrem wilde, laute Rockabilly-Band oder dieser blonde Californier der Elvis-Songs sang..... :kopf2:
Reservieren durfte man nicht. Fotografieren durfte man die Ausstellungsstücke nicht....und der Sonntags-Brunch war absolut lausig. Schade.... das Konzept ging nur in der Elvis-Week auf....unter der Woche war es leer....weil einfach nichts Spezielles da war....keine kreativen und abwechslungsreichen Ideen!!!

Ich hoffe es wird ein anderes Elvis-Restaurant eröffnet mit einem besseren Konzept!!!

Es sieht darin aus wie in einem guten Hard Rock Cafe, nur das alle Ausstellungsstücke von Elvis sind. Mir hat es auch immer sehr gut gefallen. Es ist für die Beale Street ein Verlust.

Elvis Presley's Memphis club ended its six-year run on Beale Street Tuesday, never living up to its ambitious goal of inspiring a themed chain of Elvis clubs from Las Vegas to London to Hong Kong.

About 48 employees lost their jobs in the closing, said Elvis Presley Enterprises CEO Jack Soden. He said EPE still holds the building's lease at 126 Beale and "will take some time to look at different situations and opportunities."

The club opened in 1997 with personal appearances by Priscilla Presley and Lisa Marie Presley with Jewel its opening act at a packed party that strained Fire Department codes.

One year later, Soden estimated 75 to 80 percent of the club's visitors were from out of town at a time when tourism was slowing nationally.

EPE then ran into cost problems with its first planned club outside Memphis with what Soden called exorbitant leasing fees and demands for an intended club in Leicester Square in London. It came at a time when other themed clubs, including Planet Hollywood and Hard Rock Cafes, were competing heavily and diluting the market for themed clubs.

During Elvis tribute week last month, Soden hinted the Memphis club was at a crossroads. The club had faced tough competition for musical acts from Tunica's casinos and from the heavily blues oriented crowds on Beale.

"If Elvis Presley's downtown gets better and works great, it will be there for a long time. If it doesn't, I don't see that as a cornerstone to our whole presence in Memphis," Soden said in August.

He said Tuesday it still "wasn't living up to our expectations." But he declined to be more specific in deference to "all of those wonderful employees. The most important consideration is people."

Still, employees wanted more notice.

Bartender Chris Foley was off work Monday and got a call from a colleague about the closing.

"I'm not too happy with it, Foley said. "From a business standpoint I can understand closing the restaurant. But from a personal standpoint, the way they handled it was wrong."

There had been talk about the club closing for about 18 months, said regular Kimberly Tomlinson.

The restaurant was busy when The Dempseys performed there as the house band, she said.

"It was packed until the last year and a half or so," she said.

A weekend swing-dance regular, she also thought service was not up to par and that the club relied too heavily on tourists.

"I think maybe on a whole they needed tighter service and have it aimed at more of a regulars crowd instead of just the tourists," Tomlinson said.

Most Memphians aren't Elvis fans, and most people who go to Beale Street don't go to Elvis Presley's, she said.

Memphis Restaurant Association president Christian Georgi, owner of East End grills, said he had heard rumors for six to eight months that the club was struggling.

The novelty of themed clubs generally has worn off, and the Elvis club's heavy reliance on out-of-town business probably was a major factor, Georgi said.

Memphis Convention & Visitors Bureau president Kevin Kane said he hopes any new operator will maintain the Elvis name.

"I'm still a firm believer in that. I thought it was a good balance and a good mix for the whole street."

Kane said early consultants hired to plan the club were from Dallas and "didn't understand the nuances of Memphis."

Beale Street insiders say that with the new arena, finding a new tenant shouldn't be difficult.

All of the spaces on Beale between Second and Fourth that are managed by Performa Entertainment Real Estate Inc. are either leased or under negotiations, said Toni Holman-Turner, vice president of marketing and consulting for the firm.

Only the A. Schwab building at 163 Beale and the property at 152 Beale aren't managed by Performa.

"We do our best to make sure the businesses on Beale Street reflect what Memphis is," Holman-Turner said.

Finding a tenant for Elvis Presley's shouldn't be difficult, said Rickey Peete, executive director of the Beale Street Merchants Association and a City Council member.

"What's going to happen is when the arena opens, the clubs will be filled to capacity," Peete said.

Then Beale Street will switch from a 10-month year to a 12-month year with basketball bringing people downtown during the winter off-season and to some extent overlapping with the Triple-A baseball season, Peete said.

Soden said Graceland and Elvis Presley Enterprises, like most of the U.S. tourism industry, have slowly built back from heavy losses after the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.

"It's just that this aspect (the club) wasn't improving. So we're going to try something else."

Soden declined to discuss any specific negotiations and what uses could be made of the location.

"It's a state-of-the-art building. It's in arguably the best location in downtown. The building represents an asset and an opportunity. We are definitely going to exploit that fantastic asset."

vor vielen Jahren (so um 1993 herum) wollte das Sun-Studio auch eine Kette von Sun-Studio-Cafés eröffnen....hat ja leider auch nicht geklappt.

Ist Elvis vielleicht nicht der richtige Aufhänger für so was ??? - Ich bestehe darauf, dass es für die Elvis-Fans EIN Lokal downtown (also in der Beale-Street) geben MUSS. Als Treffpunkt, weil Graceland ja seine Cafés und Imbisse abends leider schliesst...und es kein spezielles Elvis-Angebot mehr gibt.

Ueberall wird Karaoke angeboten...warum ist das nicht für das Elvis-Restaurant möglich? Ich meine alle Fans können viele seiner Songs singen...und hätten Spass an sowas?

Vielleicht war das Restaurant nicht "urchig" genug, ich meine mit dem Kristall-Leuchter und den roten Samt-Vorhängen...na ja...im Wohnzimmer o.k. aber nicht in einem Restaurant....oder???

Es spiegelte aber zum Teil den Geschmack von Elvis wieder. Ich glaube ihm hätte es so gefallen!

aber dafür steht doch schon Graceland und das (meiner Meinung nach) uninteressante Heartbreak Hotel. Muss das Restaurant auch noch so kitschig geführt werden, so dass auch andere eventuelle Gäste da nicht hinein wollen.

Man geht doch in ein Lokal, weil einem das Ambiente und die Stimmung gefällt... ansonsten geht man da doch nicht rein. Da gibt es doch soooo viele tolle erfolgreiche Lokale in der Beale Street...die EPE hat sich anscheinend nicht die Mühe gamacht....bei den anderen auch rein zu schauen um zu erfahren was bei denen der Erfolg ausmacht!!!!

Es kann ja Elvis-Like eingerichtet sein....bei dem Restaurant hat mir die Fassade von Aussen, das Signet, die Grösse, der Shop, und die Bilder von Elvis gefallen. That's it.
