New Springsteen and Presley documentaries readied for the small screen

We've got a doubleshot of documentaries coming our way with Bruce Springsteen and Thom Zimny's involvement. First up is a 90-minute Springsteen documentary from Channel 4 in the UK, "produced by Lonesome Pine Productions in collaboration with Thom Zimny," as reported by www.atvtoday.co.uk , with Bruce "in intimate conversation": "Channel 4 has been granted access to Bruce Springsteen for a documentary revealing the man behind the music. With home video from his youth, and footage from his early years performing solo in Greenwich Village, this documentary gives a unique insight into the man as well as the musician." The doc is scheduled to air before the end of the year.

Zimny, Springsteen's film archivist and go-to director, has also directed an Elvis Presley documentary for HBO, which wraps production this month. Announced this afternoon, the untitled doc is a three-hour affair, a "comprehensive journey from Elvis' childhood through the final 1976 Jungle Room recording sessions." Today's press release quotes HBO Miniseries president Kary Antholis:

"The producers came to HBO and Sony with the idea for a film drawing upon very rare footage that captures Elvis' musicianship in a new and exciting way," said Antholis. "The artistry on display in that footage reminded us of the great work by Jon Landau and Thom Zimny on HBO films documenting the studio artistry of Bruce Springsteen, and we are thrilled to have them at the helm to lend their unique cinematic perspectives to this iconic, complex and singular artist."

Jon Landau is an executive producer for the Elvis doc, and Springsteen is among the fim's interviewees.

Trotz der "very rare footage", die man angeblich zu sehen bekommt, bin ich sehr skeptisch, dass es so wahnsinnig mehr zu sehen gibt, als bei den great performances Videos. Vielleicht noch ein Lied, welches von irgend einem Film geschnitten wurde oder etwas mehr vom Screen Test, aber sicher nichts, was eine neue mehrstündige Dokumentation rechtfertigen wird.

Ähnlich wie beim Beatles Film Eight days a week, der gerade in den Kinos lief, wo man zu 95 % nur Material sah, welches man bereits kannte. Dennoch war es eine gut gemachte Dokumentation und viel mehr sollte man wohl auch hier nicht erwarten.

Neben den bekannten Outtakes von TTWII und On Tour, die wir seit Jahren von Bootlegs kennen, kamen die letzten 1-2 Jahre ja aber auch weitere professionelle '72er Aufnahmen durch Auktionen zutage, sodass davon vielleicht Gebrauch gemacht wird.

Auch was 8mm Aufnahmen angeht, gibt es in Sammlerkreisen fantastische Mitschnitte, die meiner Meinung nach nicht fehl am Platze wären bei einer Dokumentation. "Prince from another planet" war ein Schritt in die richtige Richtung, finde ich.

Ich will mir aber lieber nicht vorstellen, was für eine tolle Dokumentation entstehen könnte, da es sich hier schließlich um ein Elvis-Produkt handelt und - seien wir realistisch - die Erfahrung sagt, dass es wohl eher der typische billige Ramsch ist. Elvis By The Presleys Teil 2... Ich lasse mich aber sehr gerne eines Besseren belehren.

Ich frage mich aber, ob der sicherlich erscheinende dazugehörige Soundtrack dann endlich die erste offizielle Veröffentlichung der Liveaufnahme von "I forgot to remember to forget" beinhalten wird.

Ich freue mich zwar, wenn sich Filmemacher mit unserem Helden beschäftigen. Ich wundere mich andererseits aber schon, dass sie es überhaupt noch tun. Ich vermute, dass sich mit Elvis-Dokus doch bestimmt keine gigantischen Einschaltquoten erzielen lassen (o.k., ist jetzt nicht so sehr das Problem eines Pay-TV-Senders). Oder liegt es vielleicht daran, dass die Rechte an Elvis-Bewegtbildern nicht so übertrieben teuer sind, dass man sie immer wieder in anderer Reihenfolge aneinander reihen kann?

Ein bisschen unveröffentlichtes Material dürfen wir wohl wirklich erwarten. Ein User aus dem FECC Forum schreibt:

Lange hat man nichts gehört und im FECC Forum kam die Frage auf, wie es denn nun aussieht und ob sich das Projekt in Luft aufgelöst hat. Der oben schon zitierte User postete darauf u.a. diese Nachricht:


"I happen to know for certain, than the Filmmakers who make that Elvis Documentary for HBO finishing up that documentary! I also happen to know that as far as rare Elvis footage is concerned, this will be a Rare Footage Extravaganza!!!

Of course the documentary will not recreate entire shows and songs of fan filmed concerts, the filmmakers could, considering the amount and content of footage they could choose from, but thats not their goal.

Anyways, this documentary will be stuffed up with rare and unseen footage in brilliant quality. Its not going to be an Elvis Anthology like the Beatles Anthology was, but it certainly will be an eye catcher for anyone who digs rare and unseen footage in great quality!"

Wer so auf die Kacke haut, muss auch liefern. Ich hoffe mal, dass es nicht nur Super 8 Amateuraufnahmen sind, die zwar offiziell noch nicht veröffentlicht wurden, aber natürlich schon seit Ewigkeiten in Fankreisen zirkulieren.
